Possible Ontario NDP Leadership Candidates

Lankin and Churley speculation seems unfounded.

Rumours suggest Dinovo will endorse Tabuns. Prue will likely run as well. I've also heard that Gilles Bisson will run to represent the North

Peter Tabuns
Michael Prue
Andrea Horwath
Gilles Bisson

Meaning there is only one woman candidate. I would bet that someone like Diane O'Reggio might jump in, and I wouldn't be surprised if there are still some outsiders who will take a look.

Any thoughts

Search the province! We need

Search the province!
We need to bring forward some younger members with talent. The leadership race should not be limited to caucus members. The kind of exposure a leadership campaign will lift the profile of our NDP stars of the future. who ever heard of Martha Hall Findlay before she joined the Liberal leadership. Now she is an MP.

The current caucus has a number of solid individuals, but nobody that can be considered to have a lock on the leadership. They are mostly unknown outside the party core and their own ridings.

The federal caucus has some stars but are in a difficult spot regarding the timing of the federal election.

We need to spread the search wide and find the best candidates out there.

I would put a couple of those

I would put a couple of those at 2:1, or even 1.1:1 :)

I agree that we need a new dialog in order to put our party back on track. I think that dialog can be inclusive and interesting. Check out this thread for more ideas on how that can actually be accomplished.

I think the next strawpull will be target regions-- as in where next the party has to invest time and energy (and money?) to get the organization up and running. The only question I have is how to break down the province more than simply "Southwest", "GTA", "North", etc.

It would be really nice to

It would be really nice to see a woman of colour run, or a man of colour. I think many things have to change in this party and I think we need a leader who is willing to make changes at both a fundamental level, a grassroots level and really steer us into the future.

If Toronto is one of the areas we think we can win most seats, let's start seeing a party that reflects the constituents of the GTA. I think with the Obama win in the in the states - we can make that headway here in ON as well.

just my two cents!

Right on! What about Antony

Right on!

What about Antony Shelton?

I think Antoni Shelton would

I think Antoni Shelton would be a great candidate and he would be able to help bring in the ethnic votes.

PLS. pardon a newbie. Just started blogging and will try to keep up. G>

June 16, 2008- Howard has made it official and the candidates are positioning themselves. Probably we won't have the full slate and open public campaigning till around labour day. I would see Peter Taubuns -environmental action- in a close race with Micheal Prue- the social justice/economic angle. Giles Bison should toss his hat in the ring for the North, francophones and fun. What makes it interesting is the jockeying around the other potential serious candidates- Andrea Horwath, Cheri DeNovo and Peter Kormos. Look for wild cards like an MP or union leader or the Socialist Caucus. Should be a good exciting race with a growth in membership and energy for the ONDP.

Based on robbie_dee's (of

Based on robbie_dee's (of Rabble) list:

I'm trying to put together a list of likely and potential contenders. Here's who I have so far

Likely:

Gilles Bisson
Andrea Horwath
Michael Prue
Peter Tabuns

Other potential:
Chris Charlton
Marilyn Churley
Paul Dewar
Adam Giambrone
Frances Lankin
Brian Masse
Peter Kormos
Peggy Nash
Sid Ryan

Early indications are against:
Charlie Angus (would back Bisson)

David Christopherson (would back Horwath)

Cheri DiNovo (rumored to back Tabuns)

Long shots:
Olivia Chow
Naomi Klein
Avi Lewis
David Miller
Alex Munter

The Toronto Star reports that Cheri Dinovo will not be running: "It ain't me, babe."

Jenkins to take run at NDP

Jenkins to take run at NDP leadership

You heard it here first.

Actually I'm interested with this guy for his perspective on bringing in new blood. Right on Jodie!

Gilles Bisson considering NDP

Gilles Bisson considering NDP leadership

Not to say anything against Gilles, I saw this one coming. There is no way an ONDP leadership contest can happen these days without someone from the North at the table.

You're right that this race

You're right that this race needs a Northern voice at the table but they can't be looked at as a "token Northern" candidate. I think that Gilles would be a very strong candidate, a great leader and a strong Premier, but I'm afraid this will turn into a very Toronto-centric race and squeeze a candidate like Gilles out simply because of where he is from. In my opinion if that does happen, that will hurt the party long term

I think it is clear that

I think it is clear that Peter Tabuns will run and he is not afraid to admit it if you ask him. As we have all seen with Tabuns going across the province talking about a new energy economy it is clear he was getting out there and talking with people. With Tabuns across province tour he could come out as a front runner when people start to announce they are going to run.

On Saturday I was talking to Prue and he seems really passionate about running. After 20 years in the legislature experience is not a problem for him. Prue has an amazing sense of humor and isn't afraid to say what he thinks. Prue also comes across as a scrapper and might be what we need to get into the media more.

On the Sunday morning while at provincial council I was talking to Gilles Bisson and though he didn't say he will run for sure he did say he is considering it. Also while talking about the party’s direction just the way he was talking made it seems like he really wants to go for it. Considering that he is one of the longest serving New Democrats he might feel he has the most experience. Also while talking with Bisson he really seems to "get it" on what the party has to do in order to go forward. As he said the party has had many successes with bringing healthcare to Canada and social security ect ect but since then we have gone on the defensive and we need new ideas. Oh and a lot of northern ridings will support Bisson.

I think one challenge the

I think one challenge the party is going to have in terms of moving forward is learning to focus its attention on the things that almost everyone will be looking for them to take on, and not allowing themselves to draw attention to the smaller things that some of their constituents may get upset about.

Specifically, keeping Catholic schools and the lords prayer around were decisions made likely because of the percieved backlash of their constituents. However, on both accounts most of the party faithful were outraged that they took such positions. Also it's hard to believe that all too many people would say on the doorstep the next election

"well, I know you're right on jobs, the environment, healthcare, etc... but I really can't vote for you because you got rid of the lord's prayer in the legislature".

Any leadership candidate who can navigate our political course with this perspective is going to be good for the party.

I don't see the Lord's Prayer

I don't see the Lord's Prayer as a lasting issue.

Providing full funding to Catholic schools was a principled position taken by a party convention and reaffirmed by at least two subsequent conventions. Keep in mind that, before Bill Davis accepted the position we had been advocating for 13 years, Catholic kids had three choices at the end of Grade 10: pay tuition fees (not easy for working class families), switch schools (what kid wants to switch schools after Grade 10?), or drop out and get a job (well, Catholics don't need to go beyond Grade 10, right? That was the original rationale.)

So how could any socialist defend that situation?

As I understand things,

As I understand things, Andrea has to talk things over with her husband and family before throwing her hat in the ring.

I have heard rumours of David

I have heard rumours of David Miller running.

Miller seems like a long

Miller seems like a long shot. If anyone from Hamilton is going to run it would be Andrea.

I sure hope that Gilles

I sure hope that Gilles Bisson decides to run. The Toronto Sun was also throwing Charlie Angus's name out there, but I would be quite surprised if both he and Gilles ran

I've also started a

I've also started a collection of rumours on my site. In addition to some of the names you've listed above, I have heard speculation about:

  • Olivia Chow (very dubious, I think)
  • David Christopherson
  • Joe Comartin
  • Peggy Nash
  • Sid Ryan

David Christopherson has just

David Christopherson has just endorsed Andrea Horwath, if she should choose to run.
